MILLIONS of households can get huge discounts on essential bills every year - but plenty of support is going unclaimed. Social tariffs worth £970million for water will be missed this financial year, according to new estimates by analytics firm Policy in Practice. That's worth an average of £160 a year for more than six million households. Meanwhile, £1.7billion worth of broadband social tariffs is going unclaimed too, meaning 8.4million households miss out on £200 in savings a year, it found.

This is due to the first May bank holiday affecting the schedule - and there are even more changes later on. For Universal Credit, for example, your usual payment date depends on when you first applied and when your application was approved - there is no set day for everyone. Most people receive their first payment seven days after the end of their initial assessment period.

HUNDREDS of thousands of families are missing out on free HMRC cash worth an average of £1,970 a year. In fact, child benefit help worth a collective £1.65billion is expected to go unclaimed this financial year, according to analytics firm Policy in Practice. As of April 2024, child benefit is now worth £25.60 a week for the first child plus £16.95 a week for other children - up from £24 and £15.90 respectively. It's currently claimed by 7.7million families for more than 13.2million children.
