Birdsong can mean many different things to a Vanderbilt student: the end of an unwilling all-nighter, a call to wake up for an early-morning workout or a peaceful journey to a 9 a.m. class. While birds are ever-present in students’ lives within the arboretum that is Vanderbilt, they’re harder to spot than the squirrels for which Vanderbilt is renowned. Campus is home to diverse wildlife, including at least 20 species of birds.

    This semester has brought a mysterious increase in the number of stray cat sightings around campus, and some students have discovered the photogenic nature of our newfound Commodore cats. These cats have become a topic of conversation among students across campus, who see them daily as the cats roam campus. Recently, a group of campus cat enthusiasts has formed a GroupMe intended to share sightings and stories of the new campus habitants.

    The Cumberland River Dragon Boat Festival returned for its 15th year in Nashville, Tenn., on Sept. 23. More than 30 teams competed in the dragon boat race, 24 of which were part of the brand-new recreational division. The festival took place along the Cumberland River and supports the Cumberland River Compact’s mission to confront water pollution along the waterway.
