The city of Toledo is preparing to enforce its lead ordinance, but the state’s two-year budget that passed solely with Republican votes in the Ohio House of Representatives earlier this month slashes millions in state funding for lead abatement programs. The state’s budget is now in the hands of the Senate, but the House’s version would eliminate the governor’s Lead Safe Home Fund Program, saving $1 million a year. The city of Toledo is looking at a $23 million structural deficit for 2025. At a committee of the whole meeting Wednesday, Toledo City Council met to review the proposed budgets from the mayor’s office and city council. Afterward, council members submitted their own amendments. The council has listened to budget presentations from every department. Councilman George Sarantou didn’t have any amendments to propose. Instead, he expressed concerns about how much money was being spent.

The City of Toledo is hoping to move forward as it settles the remaining claims brought forth by 16 individuals who allege Toledo police violated their civil rights with a brutal response to a George Floyd protest rally in 2020. At its first meeting of the year, Toledo City Council approved an expenditure of $800,000 from the Risk Management Fund to settle the claims of Saray Pratt and Robert Kowalski, the last two protesters to settle.

One Toledo resident is hoping to offer voters an alternative option as the city’s mayor. South Toledo resident Roberto Torres stood outside La Mexicana grocery store on Oak Street Thursday morning to formally announce his decision to run for Toledo mayor. Mr. Torres, a Toledo native who is running as an independent candidate, said he decided to run for mayor to give residents a different option from the current leadership.
