Danish fashion is having a moment: billowing blue shirts, baggy shorts, black biker boots, not to mention cold swimming, cool Nordic blondes, fermented food and children playing street games. Biking around Copenhagen last weekend, this felt like a rare European country at ease with itself. Men kissed, students worked in cafés; smiling pensioners sipped alcohol-free beer. It was hard not to feel they’d cracked it as I parked my bike and walked away without locking up.

“Yes, yes, yes, yes,” says the usually languid Tristram Hunt pacing around the new V&A East Storehouse, pointing out exquisite, embroidered kimonos, an Iranian astrolabe, Nepalese poisoned arrows, wooden skis and a Vivienne Westwood corset. His excitement is palpable as he prowls the old Broadcast Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park at Stratford and breaks into a grin as large as the V&A’s Tippoo’s Tiger as he pounces on another exhibit. “It’s sublime, isn’t it?”He’s right.
