Attacks on DEIhave become a fixture in contemporary American life under the Trump administration, to the dismay of many, including the numerous cultural organizations that have sought to broaden and enrich the American story by including voices that historically have not been heard. Our current issue contains many references to this dark shadow and the fear and uncertainty it has instilled in minority communities and those who have sought to level the playing field.

In Kansas City, a major retrospective at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art celebrates another strong, unconventional, not-to-be-dominated woman.

Whew. In early April we learned that the unique character and identity of Kansas City’s Crossroads Art District will not be shattered by the incursion of a baseball stadium. And in other good news on the local cultural front, Pete Cowdin and Deb Pettid’s new Rabbit hOle museum of children’s literature landed a profusely illustrated front page story on the cover of The New York Times April 3 arts section.

Amid snow and sub-zero temperatures, winter in Kansas City brought moments of wonder, urgency and beauty in exhibits at Linda Hall Library and the Kansas City Art Institute’s H&R Block Artspace. Linda Hall Library’s “Chained to the Sky: The Science of Birds, Past & Future” through April 26 immerses the viewer in a veritable aviary of bird images and objects assembled by the library’s president, Eric Dorfman, and its vice president for public programs, Eric Ward.
