연방준비제도(Fed·연준)가 기준금리를 재차 동결했다. 7일(현지시간) 오후 연준은 연방공개시장위원회(FOMC) 회의에서 기준금리를 종전 수준인 4.25∼4.50%로 유지하기로 결정했다고 밝혔다. 연준 위원들은 “관망” 입장을 유지했다. 트럼프 행정부의 관세 조치 이후 경제 불확실성이 커졌다고 봤다. FOMC는 “실업률과 물가 상승의 위험이 높아졌다고 판단했다”고 설명했다. 경기가 침체한 가운데 물가가 계속 높아지는 스태그플레이션 가능성을 경고한 것이다. 제롬 파월 연준 의장은 이날 기자회견에서도 같은 입장을 재확인했다. 파월 의장은 “대규모 관세 인상”이 유지된다면 물가 상승, 경제 성장 둔화, 실업률 상승 가능성이 있다고 밝혔다. 그는 또 현재의 금리 수준이 적절하며, 트럼프의 관세 정책이 어떻게 전개되는지 조금 더 지켜볼 필요가 있다고 말했다. 그러면서 “우리는 서두를 필요가 없다고 본다. 인내심을 가질 수 있다고 생각한다”고 그는 말했다.
