    Family fun in the Portland area isn’t hard to come by, but many of our biggest attractions come with a price tag to match. To see just how much costs have grown, we’re diving into local history to check out the first admission prices at five landmark attractions and comparing them to today’s costs. Founded as the Portland Zoo in 1888, this wildlife hub was once free. In 1959, it moved to its current location and greatly expanded its offerings.

    Heads up, outdoor lovers — Seattle Parks and Rec is branching out with a brand new park in Rainier Valley. Named after the late city councilmember and advocate for families, Cheryl Chow Park opens Saturday, April 5 with a ribbon cutting ceremony, live entertainment, and snacks from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.The 1.2-acre space located on South Charleston Street was previously a plot that was land banked by Seattle Parks and Rec in the early 2010s.

    Did you know Texas was the first state to plant flowers along the highway? The Wildflower Program was created in 1932 not only to beautify your commute, but also to stabilize soil, provide reliable ground cover, and reduce maintenance and litter along roadways. TxDOT sows about 30,000 pounds of wildflower seeds annually in observation of the program. The flowers also allow workers to mow along the highways less frequently, which provides habitats for 900+ animal species.
