1 INTRODUCTION Evolution was classically considered to be a strictly historical science accessible only indirectly by working backward-in-time to infer process from pattern. Increasingly, however, researchers can employ forward-in-time studies, where experimental treatments are applied to known populations, and their subsequent evolution is monitored (Garland Jr. & Rose, 2009; Kawecki et al., 2012).
