    In 1880 the household of Dr. Charles Putnam and his wife Catherine in Malborough, MA, included five adults and seven children. The adults were the couple’s eldest son Herbert (1844-1896), Herbert’s wife Julia, their daughter Lelia (1848-1919), and their youngest son, Fred Lincoln. The children were six of Herbert and Julia’s children, including their eldest son, Charles Otis.

    At the junction of Harshaw Rd. and the road leading to the Mowry Mine is a single gravesite for Orton Phelps. Sylvester Mowry purchased the “Patagonia Mine Holdings” in 1860 and renamed the mine after himself. He expanded the mining operations and facilities, which thrived until the Civil War. The Union government arrested and imprisoned Mowry for treason. The charges were eventually dropped, but not before bankrupting Mowry.

    Anne C. Stradling has been recognized posthumously as a ‘Woman in History ‘by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Lady Banksia Chapter (Tombstone). A ceremony to commemorate the distinction was held Oct. 5 in the Patagonia Park. Plaques acknowledging the honor were presented to German Quiroga, Patagonia Historical Society, and Carrie White, Bowman-Stradling History Center, Sonoita.

    Luz Rabago Valenzuela (1828-1909) and her husband Valentine had eleven children (six boys and five girls). Luz was born in Mexico in 1858 and arrived in Arizona about 1880, with her mother, Guadalupe Rabago, and sister Jesusita. According to family stories, Luz met Valentine when he was working on a ranch near the Mission San Xavier. She died young, age 51, leaving six children under 18.

    Valentine (Val) Valenzuela, Sr. (1851-1945), the patriarch of Patagonia’s Valenzuela family, moved from California to Crittenden 145 years ago. He married Luz Rabago (1828-1909) about 1881, and they had 11 children (six boys and five girls). The family lived for many years on land they homesteaded south of Crittenden. Sometime in the early 1900s they built and moved to a two-story adobe home at 289 Duquesne Rd. in Patagonia.
