In February, Columbus City Schools Superintendent Angela Chapman appointed the Community Task Force to consider how the district could streamline and cut costs by closing some buildings, and reconfigure programs. After study and a series of public meetings, the Task Force presented its recommendations for closures to the school board in June. Board president Christina Vera says the rapid-fire process then became more deliberative.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have confirmed that star Johnny Gaudreau died last night, after he and his brother were struck by a suspected drunk driver in New Jersey hometown. The brothers were in Carney's Point for their sister's wedding when they went bicycling on a county route. Police say 43-year old Sean Higgins of Woodstown attempted to pass two vehicles on the road, and hit both Gaudreau and his 29-year old brother Matt from behind. Both died from their injuries.

A day after school board member Brandon Simmons proclaimed that discussions about Columbus City School closures were "dead" the school board announced plans last night to take a closer look - in person - at the buildings under consideration. Although there is no deadline for the board to vote on the Task Force recommendations board president Christina Vera says that from late September through October, board members will tour the schools proposed for closure.

Columbus City Schools Board member Brandon Simmons says the stalled school closures process is dead, and it's time for a bold new idea. Unfortunately, his suggestion is complicated, light on details - and possibly illegal. Simmons says the district's answer to both under-utilized buildings and and over-crowded programs is to build new. And to use the 7.7 mil levy voters approved last year for building maintenance.

Columbus City Council is once again accepting applications for vouchers of $700 or more towards an e-bike, partnering with Smart Columbus. Since launching the pilot program last year, Columbus' Resident E-bike Subsidy Program has given out nearly 300 vouchers; in May, council allocated $500,000 for up to 350 more vouchers this summer.
