1 INTRODUCTION Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness in working-age people1; pregnancy is an established risk factor for its development and progression.2 Up to 1 in 4 pregnancies with pregestational diabetes mellitus are affected by sight-threatening DR (STDR), defined as the presence of proliferative DR or diabetic macular oedema (DMO),3 highlighting the need to treat pregnant women appropriately to preserve vision.
