    There is ‘no easy solution’ to ongoing parking chaos on Westward Ho! seafront, councillors have been told. The busier months see local social media awash with residents’ complaints of parking on the double yellow lines on the seafront, typically near the Hockins ice cream van, which people fear will lead to accidents. In some cases those parked are people with a disability blue badge and while they are parked legally, many social media commentators believe the location is not suitable.

    Car park income in Torridge during 2024/25 is expected to smash £2 million, and now the council wants to stop people paying to park with cash.. It’s the first time it has been that high in many years, with drivers not appearing to be put off by the increase in charges. A four per cent rise in tariffs in April hit them for an extra £37,000 in just one month.

    “Horrendous” parking issues near the seafront in Westward Ho! could be addressed with more disabled parking bays, councillors have stressed. Cllr Louis Bach (Ind, Westward Ho!) said there are only four or five disabled parking spaces of the 130 or so in the main Westward Ho! car park owned by Torridge District Council.

    New two-metre high ‘wayfinding’ signs could pop up around Barnstaple town centre if planning permission is approved. The black and gold signs aim to ‘create a strong identity’ as well as help people find their way around and direct them to points of interest. Barnstaple Town Council is seeking permission for 20 of them at a cost of around £1,000 each. The signs will list their location, cultural points of interest, transport directions to places such as car parks and the train station.
