On its face, the reasons I chose to pursue comedy are clear: I like to laugh, I like making people laugh, and I genuinely enjoy storytelling and performance. These are all the basic, surface-level requirements for pursuing the profession of stand-up comedy. When I was in college, I had a recurring fantasy that, whenever I drove the enormous Dodge Durango I'd inherited from my father, I was dragging dead bodies behind my car. Okay, so, fantasy is probably the wrong word for it. It wasn’t whimsical or dreamy. It was bleak. Mostly it was fucking weird. I had a lot of fears about driving, and these thoughts would race in my head whenever I grabbed hold of a steering wheel.

A few months ago, I was mindlessly scrolling TikTok when I first noticed it: the algorithm was showing me video after video of Onlyfans creators participating in a trend at the time. Participants, all women, highlighted the money and material rewards their “spicy” content has given them -- IE, a new house, a hot car, luxury vacations, etc. It was a fun way to participate in something “hashtag-trending”. Creators could promote their business, while also basking in their success.

It’s embarrassing to admit now but when I first started comedy, at the young and dumb age of 22, I gave myself a five-year plan. At the time, I believed wholeheartedly that I would be starring in a Judd Apatow movie within the next five years (it was a different time, forgive me).
