As a rabbi in Philadelphia whose family moved to Palestine from Lithuania in 1809 before immigrating to the U.S., I was horrified when, in the days following the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant announced an order for Gaza’s “complete siege.”He declared that “no electricity, food, fuel or water will be delivered. We are fighting barbarians and will respond accordingly.” Reading these words, my heart sank, and I instantly felt nauseous.
