The contemporary national gay rights movement in the United States has been relatively silent on issues of incarceration, prisons, and the criminal legal system itself. It has, for decades, vigorously fought against laws that criminalized same-sex activity and crossdressing, as well as against ordinances that allowed discrimination against LGBTQ people in housing, employment, health care, family law, and inheritance.
