After a terrible 2022 for bonds, a paper by the Retirement Income Institute argued bonds have no place in a portfolio and should be replaced by annuities. I disagreed.

This investor’s error cost him upwards of $1 million over the course of his life, and yes, I’ll even share with you his real name. Al graduated college and was given money by his parents. Rather than blow it on a trip around the world, he bought 10 ounces of gold in 1980 for $6,684. He waited until gold had a 20% pullback, so as not to buy at a record high price.
