This article is for subscribers only. The tug of the trade war continues today. The UK government is still in its dual negotiations with both the US and EU – two separate teams pulling away in parallel, with briefing every day to suggest both are about to get something over the line. There’s also plenty of briefing that these teams are in fact working against each other, and that a EU deal will scupper the US one.

This article is for subscribers only. It is hard to imagine two such different uses of the military. The first is the government putting the Royal Navy on alert to escort fuel to the Scunthorpe steelworks — reminiscent of Boris Johnson sending two gunships to Jersey when sparring with France about post-Brexit fishing rights. It should be too slapstick for the appearance of a lettuce today because of the scale of market movements.
