It’s a cliché, or a truism, perhaps — the definition of truism, according to Merriam-Webster, being “an undoubted or self-evident truth, especiallyone too obvious for mention.”The definition may be valid, but as we all know, maps tell stories that are anything but obvious, and that provide endlessly interesting and important insights.

    A new book from Esri Press is being published and released this summer: The Power of Where, by Jack Dangermond, Esri, and the GIS Community. The book tells the story of the new GIS through authoritative text and hundreds of stunning visuals. It describes how the global GIS community is tackling a host of issues at scales from local to global, including planet-spanning challenges such as climate, biodiversity, poverty, health, and social justice.

    Back in 2018, Esri’s StoryMaps team launched a collection of multimedia narratives we called Living in the Age of Humans. We billed it as “a series of stories examining the Earth-wide impacts of our human presence.”We had several motivations for the series:We wanted it to showcase the rich mix of media — photos, videos, 2D maps, 3D web scenes, infographics — that we think makes ArcGIS StoryMaps such a compelling storytelling medium.

    The August 16, 2023 release of ArcGIS StoryMaps included what at first glance might seem like an unassuming new item. When you go to publish a story, you’ll see the expected options for refining story details and setting sharing levels: Since that release, if you set the sharing level at “Organization” or “Everyone,” you’ll have access to a set of “Advanced options” consisting of two checkboxes. The second of those allows you to opt out of exposing your story to web search results.
