After six facelifts, a brow lift, neck lift and a lip lift, the reality star Katie Price has new “butterfly lips”, created with tape and filler that make the lips bigger and curled upwards. Price may have had more aesthetic surgery than most, but she’s not alone in going under the knife.

When I read that Harrods, “the world’s leading luxury department store,” sells a 250-gram jar of Western Australian honey for £750 (A$1430), I nearly choked on my muesli. At about $40 per teaspoon that would make for a very expensive breakfast — though you do get to drizzle the honey with a handcrafted glass dipper from a jar inlaid with 22-karat gold. It turns out such excesses are not the preserve of upmarket British retailers catering to the aristocracy.

In this capacity, Pétain signed an armistice with the Nazi invaders and initiated a policy of collaboration. Three-fifths of France was occupied from 1940 until 1942, then the whole territory. For his role, Pétain was tried in 1945 for treason.

Though it is evidently part of an intensive, erudite and carefully thought-out argument, Graeber’s exposition comes with muted academic credentials. The referencing style makes it hard to follow exactly who said what in this debate, at least on our reading, and there is no map or glossary. As with conversations between twitchers, part of the pleasure is in the seemingly arcane detail, but this pleasure is not easily shared by outsiders.
