This pride month I have decided to take a stand and come out, this time not as asexual but instead as a Labubu hater. I am well aware that this is going to shock anyone who knows my style, as I am known for being a Miffy loving trinket aficionado. But it is time for me to speak my truth. If you have been even remotely online over the past two years you would have seen a rise in trinkets, a seemingly catchall phrase encompassing charms, plush toys, figurines, blind boxes and so on.

If, like me, you grew up in the 2010s as a theatre kid, you are likely aware of how monolithic many of the leading ladies were at the time. All immensely talented, pitch perfect but largely the same. White, thin, doll-like face, straight passing, all of these ladies could go from playing Cosette, to Glinda, to Sandy, to Elle. Even the more edgy roles like Elphaba and Veronica Sawyer were still largely interchangeable.

2025 is a year that has already brought with it so many bad things – but the one department that 2025 is doing a stellar job at is giving us some great movies. From coming of age dramas, to a Black female-led buddy comedy, I am in the cinemas with a comically large popcorn in hand and my phone switched to airplane mode. I’m seated. The theatre employees are scared and asking me to leave because I’ve “seen movies every day for a month” but I’m simply too seated.

A recent study by the Policy Institute at Kings College London, in partnership with aromantic asexual activist Yasmin Benoit, has shed some light on just how fundamentally misunderstood asexuality is by the general public. The key findings are as follows;One in three (31%) respondents in an experimental study of 400 people believing asexuality can be “cured” by therapy. Two in five (42%) respondents believe people cannot be asexual if they have sex.

For many of you reading this, I am sure that you are picturing our current political landscape. For theatre kids and those who have been foaming at the mouth for the release of the first Wicked movie, the Wizard is another example of this.

I wish that I could say “same old story, time again”, but truly this is new territory for asexual people, as one of the music industry's biggest stars has stated that they are on the asexual spectrum! In a 2023 episode of the We're Having Gay Sex Podcast, songstress Chappell Roan revealed that she considers herself demisexual, bemoaning this fact as she wishes that she could experience having casual sex, but that just isn’t the way she is wired.

Exposure therapy. I have a problem – make that two problems. And they are seated directly on my chest. Yes, I’m talking about my boobs. The two sacks of soft fat that have caused me no small amount of grief over the past decade of having G-cups. From searing back pain to hypersexualisation, I’ve been through it all. But there’s an additional factor that adds to my discomfort surrounding my boobs: my asexuality.
