This pride month I have decided to take a stand and come out, this time not as asexual but instead as a Labubu hater. I am well aware that this is going to shock anyone who knows my style, as I am known for being a Miffy loving trinket aficionado. But it is time for me to speak my truth. If you have been even remotely online over the past two years you would have seen a rise in trinkets, a seemingly catchall phrase encompassing charms, plush toys, figurines, blind boxes and so on.

If, like me, you grew up in the 2010s as a theatre kid, you are likely aware of how monolithic many of the leading ladies were at the time. All immensely talented, pitch perfect but largely the same. White, thin, doll-like face, straight passing, all of these ladies could go from playing Cosette, to Glinda, to Sandy, to Elle. Even the more edgy roles like Elphaba and Veronica Sawyer were still largely interchangeable.

2025 is a year that has already brought with it so many bad things – but the one department that 2025 is doing a stellar job at is giving us some great movies. From coming of age dramas, to a Black female-led buddy comedy, I am in the cinemas with a comically large popcorn in hand and my phone switched to airplane mode. I’m seated. The theatre employees are scared and asking me to leave because I’ve “seen movies every day for a month” but I’m simply too seated.
