As the country mourns former President Jimmy Carter, residents in Yazoo City honored their connection to the 39th U.S. president. In 1977, Carter visited Yazoo City for a town hall meeting in what was then a brand-new high school. “He was brought here by Owen Cooper, who was a member of the Baptist Convention,” said Ardis Russell, who attended the town hall meeting. “(Cooper) was the president of the biggest corporation here: Mississippi Chemical.”The president stayed at Cooper’s home.
