When Don Meister walks into his local blood donation clinic in Saskatoon, he knows he’ll leave feeling better than when he arrived. “It’s just always been a great feeling,” he said. Meister first donated blood in the early 1980s, almost by coincidence. He was a security guard at the university where he passed by a pop-up donor clinic. “I figured I can set a good example, so I rolled up my sleeve right there and donated,” he said. Forty years later, he’s donated 306 times.

A Saskatchewan woman who contracted measles last month wants more people to get vaccinated against the disease to prevent others from getting sick. Michelle Knorr, 55, was hospitalized late last week after fighting a high fever, body shakes, dehydration, vomiting and diarrhea for several days. “I just kept on thinking it was the worst flu bug I had ever had in my life,” she told CTV News from her home in Kindersley.

The way Canadian youth access care for mental health disorders has changed from pre-pandemic years. According to a new report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) released today, more young Canadians are being prescribed medications and visiting the doctor’s office to treat their disorders, while fewer patients are ending up in hospitals and emergency departments. New data shows rural Canadians face a higher and more severe rate of crime than those living in the city. In 2023, the police-reported crime rate was 34 per cent higher in rural communities than in urban centres, according to a new report released Tuesday from Statistics Canada. That same year, the violent crime rate, which includes homicides, intimate partner violence and assaults, was 1.7 times higher in rural areas.
