As I have recently discussed, the evidence-lacking COVID-19 lab leak origin theory has been part of a right-wing partisan effort pushed by the GOP-led House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic (HSSCP), the Heritage Foundation, and established pandemic political bad actors. Recommendations on lab leak talking points were featured in the April 2020 “Corona Big Book” published for Republicans by the strategic communications firm O’Donnell & Associates.

The GOP COVID-19 subcommittee appears to have followed a script from the Heritage Foundation that’s behind Project 2025. To hear Donald Trump tell it, recalling the early days of the pandemic on this year’s campaign trail, he was the hero who did an outstanding job of leading the nation through the chaos and does not get sufficient credit for his stellar performance.

In late January 2022, the winter America grappled with the deadly initial Omicron COVID-19 wave, thousands of protesters descended on Washington for the Defeat the Mandates rally. The event had been promoted by Dr. Robert Malone of the anti-vax group The Unity Project on Joe Rogan’s extremely popular, conspiracy-friendly Spotify podcast.

This event is hosted by the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, and notably not its prestigious medical or public health schools.

Of particular concern to public health and medical experts is the participation of the university’s new president, Jonathan Levin, who previously served as its business school dean. The event itself was organized by Stanford health economist and author of the pro-economy, anti-lockdown Great Barrington Declaration, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya.

The Stanford University health economist disastrously advised Trump on pandemic policy and was a co-author of the scientifically rebuked, pro-economy/anti-lockdown Great Barrington Declaration (GBD). Now, he is on the board of directors for a group that continues pushing the lab leak COVID-19 origin hypothesis. Biosafety Now announced the addition of Bhattacharya on their Twitter/X account on August 14.
