The London police seemed at first bemused and then later overwhelmed by the crowds in attendance, but kept their role to one of traffic control rather than trying to direct the huge crowds.

The London police seemed at first bemused and then later overwhelmed by the crowds in attendance, but kept their role to one of traffic control rather than trying to direct the huge crowds. An Irish band played the Fields of Athenry as the crowd waited on the star turn arriving. London cabbies shook their head and waved their fists in anger at the traffic chaos eating into their profits, but they were in the minority.
