Categories: When I first joined La DePaulia in the 2024 Winter quarter, I had no idea the tremendous impact it would have on my life. I was in my freshman year at DePaul, barely adjusting to living my first year and a half in Chicago, having previously moved from Indiana as a mother of two.

Hundreds of DePaul students and community members patiently waited in line for their free sopes, esquites, aguas frescas and other Mexican delights at DePaul University’s Latinx Cultural Center’s third “Feria” celebration. A mechanical bull along with rows of merchant vendors, student groups, and even “Los Plebes del K,”—a Mexican band from Wisconsin, were all gathered on the breezy Thursday night.

Cientos de estudiantes de DePaul y miembros de la comunidad esperaron pacientemente en fila para recibir sopes, esquites, aguas frescas y otros antojitos mexicanos. Un toro mecánico, junto con filas de vendedores, grupos estudiantiles e incluso “Los Plebes del K”, una banda mexicana de Wisconsin, se reunieron en la fresca noche del jueves en la tercera celebración de la “Feria” organizada por el Centro Cultural Latinx de la Universidad DePaul.

A dazzling array of colorful embroidered skirts spun in synchronicity and the sound of stomping boot soles echoed as Ballet Folklorico Chicago dancers practiced at the Petrillo Music Shell in Grant Park, for the closing ceremony of El Grito Chicago, on Sunday, September 15. El Grito Chicago is a two-day festival honoring Mexican Independence Day, in hopes of bringing back and expanding a celebration to commemorate the Mexican immigrant community in Chicago.
