GQEBERHA - The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in the Eastern Cape has decided to only purchase waste collection trucks that come with service and maintenance plans, following rampant vehicle breakdowns. In March, 16 refuse trucks that were already out of service due to mechanical problems were stripped of their engines and gearboxes while parked at municipal depots. Many of the trucks were idle for years, largely because the metro lacks sufficient mechanics to carry out the necessary repairs.

JOHANNESBURG - The Eastern Cape will be in the spotlight in the next two days as Cabinet visits the province to take a closer look at issues affecting residents. This is similar to Ramaphosa’s state visit to Gauteng in March, where he illuminated frustrations over the poor state of Johannesburg.

GQEBERHA - President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived at the Port of Ngqura in the Eastern Cape, where he is conducting an oversight visit of its operations. Situated 20km north of Gqeberha, the port is known as one of the fastest growing on the continent in the last 15 years. Ramaphosa’s visit is the first item on Cabinet’s two-day visit to the Eastern Cape. As you drive into the Port of Ngqura in Nelson Mandela Bay, the first sight that greets you is a line of cargo vessels docked along the bay.
