About a year ago, my friend Sheri McCormick shared that she had the best cup of coffee and cinnamon roll at One More Cup in Burlington, Indiana. While our grand babies were in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit in April, I had much time to reflect on the fragility of life. My time of reflection brought me to a column I wrote some time ago about my own baby and a pastor whom I dearly love. I pray the words bring hope to those who are struggling or consumed with worry and fear.

My high school principal, guidance counselor, and English teacher were Black. The color of their skin did not concern me — a non-issue, irrelevant. I did not once think they were somehow inferior. It certainly had no bearing on how I went about my day as a teenager in the halls of Freehold High School. Mr. Charles Figg, my principal; Miss Lillie Ham, my guidance counselor; and Dr. Robert Hussey, my English teacher, were three of the smartest people I knew at the time.
