WITHERBEE — Approximately 150 youngsters and their adult companions came out of the woods and on to the shore as one fishing line after another plopped its bait into Roe Pond forming concentric circles while waiting for a tug, and the subsequent splashing of, “a big one” during a recent fishing derby. Roe Pond is intended for those 15 years old and younger. Others fishing in this “dedicated children’s pond” are subject to a minimum fine of $100.

LEWIS/WHALLONSBURG — Though they may have had to slog through some muddy and water pooled sections as well as be cognizant of slippery leaves and rock surfaces, approximately 500 intrepid hikers accepted the challenge of Champlain Area Trail System’s Grand Hike, May 10. “The Grand Hike is a true celebration of the Champlain Valley’s natural wonders and the incredible trails that CATS has worked tirelessly to create and maintain,” said Arin Burdo, Executive Director of CATS.

MINEVILLE — Approximately 60 Veterans, family members and friends gathered around Keith Mero’s front yard to witness the raising of a flag pole and stars and stripes to honor the Veteran’s service during and after his enlistment, May 17. According to Mero’s bio submitted for North Country Honor Flight in 2022, he served in the U.S. Army from 1979 to 1992 in the Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations.

WESTPORT — As part of its on-going efforts to stabilize rivers and wetlands the Boquet River Association recently held a tree-planting exercise as part of its Beaver Brook riparian buffer restoration project. In spite of rainy conditions and chilly temperatures 52 volunteers whose, in many cases, bright colored raingear stood out against the grey sky, headed down the trail to plant 685 native trees and shrubs.
