Thrombotic and other cardiovascular events were generally less frequent after COVID-19 vaccination than before or without vaccination, except for known rare events, according to a longitudinal study of the adult population in England. The UK authors said the findings offered “reassurance” about the cardiovascular safety of such vaccines, regardless of the brand or whether the dose was part of the primary course or a booster.

Moderate doses of inhaled corticosteroids more than double the risk of cardiovascular events, pulmonary embolism and pneumonia, and high doses increase the risk even further, researchers report. The authors of the UK observational study [link here] said the findings highlighted the importance of adhering to current guidelines that recommend using the lowest effective dose of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) to mitigate the risk of adverse events.

Doctors who treated the first eight cases of artificial stone silicosis in the UK are calling on the government follow Australia’s example in banning the silica-dust generating material. The team from the Royal Brompton Hospital, London and other hospitals in south England made the call in a bid to stem a tide of cases that is expected in the next few years.

A study has provided long awaited evidence of the effectiveness of the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) in patients with common immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. The observational study showed that the vaccine protected against hospitalisation and death from pneumonia, and reduced primary-care visits for lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) requiring antibiotics, in this group of patients.
