I think about The All-American Rejects as the anthem of my teen years, but the truth is that “Swing, Swing,” the song that I most associate them with, came out when I was nine years old. “Dirty Little Secret” when I was twelve, and finally, “It Gives You Hell” when I was fifteen. I couldn’t possibly have been following them from the beginning, but somehow they have become the soundtrack of my coming of age, even though I was a child the entire time.

From the beginning, it was theorized that Charli XCX’s “Girl, So Confusing,” taken from her brand new album BRAT was a Lorde diss track. “People say we’re alike/ they say we have the same hair/ we talk about making music/ but I don’t know if it’s honest” she sings, referencing a peer in the industry who she finds herself comparing and competing with. A diss track would have been fascinating. But what it has turned into is much better.
