We all get lonely sometimes. But in the United States, the problem has become so severe that the surgeon general says the health effects from the lack of connection are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Loneliness was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and now healthcare professionals are beginning to treat the condition. The reasons for the rise in loneliness aren’t clear cut, but there are several contributing factors — including deteriorating social connections.
