But in the United States, the problem has become so severe that the surgeon general says the health effects from the lack of connection are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Loneliness was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and now healthcare professionals are beginning to treat the condition. The reasons for the rise in loneliness aren’t clear cut, but there are several contributing factors — including deteriorating social connections.
