Prisoners have been heard howling in the back of court cells, screaming for help, as unprecedented arrests after law changes brought court proceedings to a halt. In the first 24 hours since new breaches of bail laws came into effect, police arrested 31 people, causing Darwin Local Court to come to a standstill on Tuesday.

    Anthony Albanese has joined survivors of Cyclone Tracy to revisit the place it first made landfall to commemorate 50 years since Darwin was destroyed and more than 60 lives lost. Speaking at a ceremony on Christmas morning the Prime Minister said people still carried the pain and trauma of the natural disaster. “Today, as we reflect on the destructive force of nature at its very worst, we also remember and honour the strength and kindness of Australians at their very best,” he said.

In a landmark case activists are taking a US-based gas company to the Federal Court under Labor’s water trigger laws. Lock the Gate Alliance has filed a legal challenge against Tamboran B2 Pty Ltd over its plans to frack 15 gas wells in the Northern Territory’s Beetaloo Basin, near the town of Daly Waters.
