So it begins. This week Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. launched a sweeping initiative to investigate potential links between environmental toxins — such as pesticides, food additives, and mold — and chronic conditions such as autism. In a speech he delivered in Indiana, Kennedy announced he’ll find the “cause” of autism by September (that alone contradicts the scientific process — you’re supposed to start with a hypothesis, not a conclusion).

Did you know that almost 40 percent of all food in the United States goes to waste? Food that is safe to eat, nutritious, and available goes in our collective trash cans. We throw away 133 billion pounds of food each year. It’s a staggering statistic, especially when you consider that some of our neighbors are food insecure. I’ve served on the board of directors for an Indiana-based nonprofit called Cultivate Food Rescue for the past three years.

It announced the launch of its newest label: Non-UPF Verified. This “helpful” label will let you know that a food product is free from ultra processed foods. Ostensibly, the marketing initiative claims this will aid shoppers to make healthier choices.

Fighting disinformation around agriculture can be frustrating. Just like a hydra, whenever you manage to slay (er, discredit) one influencer, three more pop up in his or her place. Because deceitful statements boiled down to “common sense” is easier to understand than a lot of science.
