On May 2, Russell T. Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), sent a letter to Senator Susan Collins, chair of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, outlining President Trump's recommended changes to discretionary spending for fiscal year (FY) 2026. One of the administration’s recommendations is to eliminate Title III funding—the only federal grant program specifically geared towards supporting English learners (ELs) and recent immigrant students.

Fifty-six years ago today, Fred Rogers testified before the Senate Subcommittee on Communications to ask them to maintain $20 million in funding for public broadcasting. Rogers, as most will know, was the man behind Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, the television show aimed at supporting young children’s social emotional development. He explained that much of his work focused on helping children understand that they are unique, they are cared for, and that they can manage their feelings.

Until recently, Nevada’s Washoe County school district was working with the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) West on a project to reduce chronic absence. The REL West team was in the middle of conducting multiple studies including one on early warning indicators, another examining a specific intervention they were testing to reduce chronic absence, and another looking at how the district could improve their student absence review boards.
