Every so often, I get on Zoom with someone whose work and mind I admire, and then I bring our conversation to you. Today that someone is the novelist, literary critic, and educator , whose third book Small Rain was published on September 3. His body of work means more to me than that of any other living writer. I remember the first time I encountered his writing, how puzzled and then intrigued and then bewitched I was by his sentences.

In Rotherham and Tamworth, hotels housing asylum seekers were set on fire; in Burnley, Muslim graves were vandalized. On social media, videos are said to show young people beating those they perceive to be Muslims in the street. In one post from Hull, a man is pulled from his car and physically assaulted by a group of masked men.

I first took issue with something the literary critic Merve Emre said when she wrote an intense and in-depth pan of Minna Dubin’s book, Mom Rage: The Everyday Crisis of Modern Motherhood, for The New Yorker. Because I used to have a podcast called Mom Rage, people had alerted me to this review and, surely I read it with more personal investment and degree of bias than other casual readers might have. I wanted to write about how the review had frustrated me.
