An oversized 1960s-era teletypewriter (TTY) emits fog and flashes with green light that shines onto the walls of a set, which has transformed the stage into an old house in Salem, Mass. That spooky hue is the work of Lighting Designer Annie Wiegand in Autocorrect Thinks I’m Dead, a play that debuted in September at the Sound Theater Company in Seattle, Washington. “It’s green because back in the day, Deaf people called a TTY ‘the green monster,’” Wiegand says. “I didn’t even need to research it.

Aubrie Bauer’s hands flew as she argued why President Joe Biden shouldn’t run in the 2024 election. The junior’s passion for signing, debate, and this topic helped her win the 4th Annual Stories and Speeches in Sign Competition, held by Gallaudet’s Center for Democracy in Deaf America (CDDA) in the Multi-Purpose Room in SAC on October 5th.

To explain his research, Dr. Octavian Robinson, ’02 & G-’04, signs ‘Crip’ as in the world being thrown upside down. The associate professor of Deaf Studies and his collaborator, the late Dr. Jon Henner, E-’05, both began writing about ableist systems and attitudes toward language over the past decade. This led them to develop what they dubbed “Crip Linguistics,” a framework that recognizes that people have different ways of using language, and all of those ways are valid.

On Friday, September 30, Gallaudet’s Office of Research hosted an event honoring faculty and staff who have current federal grants. Provost Dr. Khadijat K. Rashid, ’90; Dr. Paige Franklin, ’91, Interim Dean of the Faculty, and each School Director praised 40 researchers for their contributions to the university, their respective fields, and the Deaf community. Projects recognized represent a wide range of disciplines, from theater to linguistics, and astronomy to interpretation.
