Benefits claimed by households containing at least one foreign citizen have nearly doubled in the past three years to more than £900 million a month, according to government figures. A freedom of information request to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) showed that in March this year, such households received £941 million in universal credit payments, compared with £461 million in March 2022.

THE Sopranos actor Charley Scalies has died aged 84, after a battle with Alzheimer's. Charley, who also starred in The Wire, passed away at a Pennsylvania nursing home on Thursday, his family has revealed. An obituary posted on Legacy read: "Best known first and foremost as a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend."It added that the actor's "favourite audience was always seated around the dinner table".

AN ASTON Villa legend has died - as tributes pour in for the last surviving member of 1957 FA Cup-winning team. Peter McParland had recently celebrated his 91st birthday, according to the club. In a statement, a spokesperson wrote: "Peter, who recently celebrated his 91st birthday, will always be remembered as the player who scored both goals when Villa beat Manchester United 2-1 in the 1957 FA Cup final.

FOURTEEN children have been released on police bail after they were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of a 14-year-old in a fire. The children, including 11 boys and three girls, were arrested after a body believed to be that of 14-year-old Layton Carr was found inside an industrial park building.
