We traveled just over an hour from a fishing camp in Navolato, in central Sinaloa, to the clandestine laboratory, maneuvering our skiff through a canal that local fishermen call “El Pericón.” Not just anyone can navigate here. Besides the narrow spots, there are shallow depths where a boat can run aground. It requires skill and experience, not a problem for our guide, who took us through the mangroves to the spot where a methamphetamine lab was dismantled in October 2021.

Navegamos poco más de una hora desde un campo pesquero de Navolato, en el centro de Sinaloa, hasta un laboratorio clandestino. Entramos por un canal al que los pescadores llaman “El Pericón”, no cualquiera es capaz de llevar su panga por ese lugar; además de tener partes demasiadas estrechas, tiene otras con poca profundidad donde la embarcación puede encallar.

You don’t have to walk far into the Nuestra Señora Nature Reserve to see plastic trays, containers, and even gas cylinders scattered in the wilderness. Some float in the water, trapped where the river bend catches debris from upstream. They’re the remnants of synthetic drug production, washed down by rain from narco-laboratories high in the Sierra Madre of the western Mexican state of Sinaloa. The chemical odors they bring seem otherworldly in the pristine environment.

Sin caminar demasiado, se encuentran bandejas, contenedores y hasta cilindros de gas entre la naturaleza. Algunos están dentro del agua, sobre todo en los lugares donde los ríos hacen curvas, y se huelen olores que no encajan con el ambiente. Son utensilios para la fabricación de droga sintética, muchas veces arrastrados por las lluvias desde narcolaboratorios en lo alto de la sierra en Sinaloa.
