    The first Lady Chief Justice was sworn in today as the most senior judge in England and Wales. Dame Sue Carr appeared at the Royal Courts of Justice in front of her family, heads of the legal profession and Lord Chancellor Alex Chalk, as well as scores of senior judges. The Lady Chief Justice Lady Carr is the 98th person in the role - which dates back to the 13th century - and her swearing in follows the retirement of former Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett. Lady Carr picked her own title.

    A man found guilty of murdering his estranged wife has been denied parole from prison after maintaining his innocence and refusing to reveal where her body is. Glyn Razzell was convicted of the murder of his wife, Linda Razzell, 41, and sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 16 years, in 2003. Mother-of-four Mrs Razzell disappeared on her way to work at Swindon College, Wiltshire, in March 2002 and no trace of her body has ever been found.

    Water companies have been ordered to pay back £114million to customers after failing to meet key targets. All but five of the 17 water and wastewater companies will be forced to give money back to bill-payers after underperforming on reducing pollution, leakage and supply interruptions, the regulator Ofwat said. The repayments will be made through reduced bills rather than customers receiving a lump sum refund. Not one company achieved the regulator's top category of 'leading'.
