My first true art experience occurred when, as a six-year-old, my mother took me to the muséee du Louvre in Paris. Armed with a camera – a gift for the occasion – I visited and captured what I thought were the most impressive works of art in the museum.

As institutions that foster and display works of art, the recently opened Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art follow in a tradition of female cultural philanthropy, the most immediately recognizable example of which is perhaps that of Peggy Guggenheim. This photograph shows her, aged 63, in her palace in Venice surrounded by a few favourite works: an African sculpture, an Alexander Calder mobile, and Pablo Picasso’s 1937 painting On the Beach.
