Introduction Dextromethorphan (DEX), a codeine analogue devoid of opiate side effects, is broadly used as an over-the-counter cough suppressant.1 Although the efficacy of DEX has been confirmed in both clinical2-6 and experimental cough challenge studies,7, 8 there is a paucity of information about the relative contribution of its metabolite dextrorphan (DOR) to overall antitussive activity in humans.
