Since the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime, the region has been constantly criticizing the United States for allegedly having neglected “the day after” in Iraq. It seems the US and the West have become convinced that this neglect had been a mistake, and they now repeat them in the context of the war between Israel and Iran.

After a week in purdah, "Supreme Guide" Ali Khamenei broke his silence on Wednesday with a brief and enigmatic message recorded in his current secret location. Well, the location may be secret to most of us but not to Israel and its US ally, who claim they know where the "Guide" is hiding. This was a strange message. At no point did the "Guide" admit that Iran was facing a major crisis.

Poland is emblematic of the fate of weak countries surrounded by strong ones, which may pay the price of the wars of the strong as well as their agreement. It has been partitioned three times in its history, and, for years, it disappeared from the map. Mind you, a Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was formed in 1385, and it was a formidable and powerful state in the 16th century.

Last week, the idea resurfaced that Israel may target Iran’s Supreme Leader – as if he were just another easy military target in the fierce war between Israel and Iran, which may soon involve the United States. US President Donald Trump made a point of distancing himself from the Israeli plan, announcing that the Iranian Supreme Leader is at the top of Israel’s target list and now within their reach. Trump made it clear he opposes Israel’s move and does not support it.

While President Donald Trump prepares for G7 and NATO summits this month, political circles and media in Europe are busy trying to cut him down to size before the two events. "Trump will come empty-handed," says one commentator. "None of the things he announced with fanfare has been achieved."Other commentators use such phrases as "deflated balloon" and "bogged down in the mess he created."At first sight, it looks certain that he has not scored big on any of the dramatic goals he announced.

This conflict cannot be resolved with a two-state solution. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed this point recently, warning the Security Council that hope for a two-state solution may dissipate entirely. This conflict cannot be settled through perpetual war and the firepower of the Israeli occupation that is seeking endless annexation, gulping up more and more land through the expansion of settlements.

In South Lebanon, the faces of the massacre’s survivors were terrifying and harrowing. Amid the rubble of what used to be homes, the people are visibly apprehensive, in pain, and broken. No one was celebrating Eid-Al-Adha, not even the children. Both north and south of the Litani River, everyone in the South is deeply apprehensive about the future. This anxious anticipation- before or after defeat- has manifested itself in many forms, reflecting its causes and implications in various ways.

Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa has a knack for politics. He owes his political instincts to his layered character, his remarkable personal journey that took him from the leader of the al-Nusra Front to President of Syria in a few years, and a keen reader of the lessons of history. Sharaa has not succumbed to popular pressure as previous leaders had, most notably President Gamal Abdel Nasser. The latter paid a heavy price for going along with the masses.
