The news media’s status as a check on the government is under attack. And in some cases, it’s unfriendly fire from within news outlets. Longtime opinion editor Laura Castañeda says she’s a casualty. She says The San Diego Union-Tribune fired her last week shortly after managers nixed an editorial on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Los Angeles. She spoke with KPBS. As meteorologist for the National Weather Service, Tardy has talked about all things climate to KPBS’s audience in San Diego and elsewhere for 32 years. California Gov. Gavin Newsom is condemning President Trump’s decision to deploy Marines and National Guard troops to Los Angeles without the state’s consent, calling the move a “downward spiral” for American democracy. Over the weekend, protests erupted across Los Angeles following aggressive immigration enforcement actions. Federal agents operating in unmarked vans conducted workplace raids in the area, arresting more than 40 people.

Americans’ trust in the news media grew 8 percentage points this year, compared to 4 percentage points in 2024, according to a recent survey by the data firm YouGov. But news consumption remains as politically divided as the country. With few exceptions such as financial news sources like Forbes and The Economist, or The Weather Channel, Democrats and Republicans don’t have faith in the same outlets. In its poll, YouGov asked people about the trustworthiness of 52 news sources.
