GTA area to get 4 new fire stations

Darjeeling: The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) area is all set to get four new fire stations. While two among the four will come up in the Kalimpong district at Algarah and Gorubathan, the remaining two will be located in the Darjeeling district at Sonada and Sukhipokhari. All four will be two-pump fire stations. “The process for the Sukhiapokhri fire station is nearly complete. Land has been located on Pokhriabong Road. The land is under the Darjeeling Improvement (DI) Fund.
Tiger Hill to get new observatory gallery and deck

Darjeeling: The tourism department of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) has labelled the existing pavilion at Tiger Hill, Darjeeling as an unsafe and flawed structure and plans to dismantle it. It will be replaced by a state-of-the-art “Observatory Gallery and Deck” with modern amenities. The tourism department of the GTA invited tourism stakeholders to watch a PowerPoint presentation of the proposed construction on Monday.

Darjeeling: The Hills are once again on the boil over “Sahid Diwas” (Martyrs’ Day) commemoration slated for Saturday. While some hill outfits have to down shutters half way in Kalimpong and full in Darjeeling from noon to 1 pm ‘in remembrance of martyrs,’ the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM) has opposed the downing of shutters as part of the commemorations. This has made the situation fluid in the Hills, especially in Kalimpong.

Darjeeling: The day after Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) chief Anit Thapa raised objections to the district administration of Darjeeling and Kalimpong taking unilateral decisions without consultation with the GTA in matters regarding land, Rajesh Chauhan, Deputy Chairman, GTA was in Kolkata on Friday to meet the concerned ministers. He claimed that the ministers on behalf of the Chief Minister had assured him that the district administration henceforth would abstain from such action.

Darjeeling: Protests broke out in the Tunnel 9 area of the Sevoke-Rangpo Railway link area under the Kalimpong District over the death of a worker by a crusher machine. The deceased has been identified as 42 year old Rajen Chettri of Kirney. “He was working on an ITDC Railway project and accidentally got into the beat roller of the crusher machine and died. The complaint of his wife Uma Devi has been received and necessary legal action is being taken.

Darjeeling: Anit Thapa, Chief Executive, Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) has objected to signages “this land belongs to West Bengal government,” put up by the district administration in different parts of the Hills without consultation with the GTA. He will write to the Bengal government regarding this. He has urged the district administration to consult the GTA before taking any such steps.

Darjeeling: Fresh slides and cracks have been reported on the National Highway 10, the lifeline connecting Sikkim with the plains of Bengal on Wednesday. This has emerged as a major damper to the plans of reopening a single lane of the NH10 for light vehicles. The NH10 has been closed for quite some time owing to landslides along the road, specially at Birikdanra and Selfydanra. Alternate routes are however open to traffic.
