LAHORE: Speculative trade in sugar has begun pushing prices of the sweetener up even before the arrival of Ramazan and during the sugarcane crushing season. Sugar prices have registered a Rs12 per kg increase during the last week in city markets as a 50kg bag of the commodity in the local market has reached Rs7400 after an increase of Rs600.

LAHORE: The local cotton market was showing a bullish trend as white lint rates on Thursday touched the highest mark of Rs20,000 per maund for the ongoing season. On the other hand, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has called a special meeting on Monday to discuss whether to maintain sales tax exemption on imported cotton and yarn.

LAHORE: The International Cotton Association (ICA) has placed at least 84 Pakistani textile mills on the defaulter’s list and prohibited them from trading in the world cotton markets. The ICA website revealed on Monday that 84 Pakistani textile companies could not honour their cotton purchase agreements, and association members were asked not to enter into any deal with them. Most of these units are in Karachi and Lahore, and a few are from Faisalabad, Multan, Hyderabad and Kasur.

LAHORE: After a record cotton imports this year, the textile industry has also begun importing yarn on a large scale, it has been learnt. Sources say that the textile mills imported 66,000 tonnes of cotton yarn in the first four months (July-October) of the ongoing financial year. The volume is equivalent to about 0.45 million bales of cotton.

LAHORE: The PPP, an ally of the ruling PML-N, has opposed the idea of proscribing the PTI and has instead urged the government to take steps for mainstreaming the opposition party after a resolution was submitted with the Punjab Assembly seeking a ban on the PTI. “We are not in favour of banning the PTI or sidelining it. Rather, the government should take the initiative to bring the PTI into the national mainstream,” Punjab PPP general secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza said.

LAHORE: Phutti arrivals at ginning factories kept a promising trend for the third consecutive fortnight, strengthening hopes for harvesting over six million bales this season. Cotton production during the last three fortnights remained 22 per cent higher than last season’s. However, the total arrivals touched 4.894m bales till Nov 15, which is 34pc less year-on-year, according to the data released by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association on Monday.
