It’s never too late no matter how old you are and there’s no better time than now to learn to ski or snowboard. Two of our writers went out on their own paths this season in pursuit of doing just that, and, in the process, gained insight and experience into the cult of snow-sliding fanatics. It’s hard for someone in North Idaho to admit, but I gave up on Ski Hill Life a couple of seasons ago. It was not for lack of effort or investment in all things ski-related.

As far as I can tell, it’s comprised of a buttered danish for breakfast, a boiled egg for lunch, and whatever I cooked for dinner that night (extra points if steak is involved). And always: A salad. While I clank around in the kitchen, she sips white wine with her best friend, Neva, three ice cubes per glass.

By Ammi Midstokke As someone whose spirituality is primarily limited to the worship of coffee, it may seem out of place that I’m convinced trees have souls. I’m sure there is a more scientific explanation: tree pheromones and tree communication through root systems and diseases and parasites that make them droop and dry out as though they were as broken hearted about climate change as we are.

I did, however, have a Greek lover (as I recommend all people do at least one time in their life) who was trying to help me understand the great burden of being a Greek man.

Last autumn, I was winding my way toward a ridge in the Salmo-Priest Wilderness when a shadow cast briefly over my head once, twice, then thrice. The trees were thinning out as I climbed higher, but whatever was flying about was taking a pass, then settling safely in the camouflage of those towering, gnarled conifers.

Allan Weisbecker was no exception, though one might argue he’d earned the right to be territorial and pretentious, no matter where on the ocean he happened to be surfing. Weisbecker began surfing in 1965, rode with the legends, saw and surfed swells everywhere from the coasts of Africa to Alaska to New York.

Making sense of gut health and why it mattersOf all the love poems ever written, they all seemed to focus on the heart, as if this singular organ was more than a glorified pump. Even Rumi failed to get lyrical about the intestines, despite their sinewy silken lining, their miraculous membranes of blood vessels, the rhythmic undulation of cilia, their constant gurgle and grumble a song in itself. While there are still few poems on the matter, definitely the media is inundated with talk of the gut.

Nothing welcomes in the cycling season like riding your bike for 24 hours in an event that is something like Burning Man meets Bike Fair (replacing the illicit drugs of the former with the electrolyte mixtures of the latter).

We marvel at her simple ingenuity for survival and her spiritual exploration, where suffering and gratitude bring her to a new understanding of god.
