At 9.13am on 17 January 2022, I was in a cab in London, on my way to meet Sir Ian McKellen for my BBC series Amol Rajan Interviews. I received a call from a withheld number – never a good sign when a loved one is in hospital. “Please come immediately,” said the nurse. “He’s not responding.”That was the day everything changed. In retrospect, aged 38, I was quite an old child that morning. But I’ve been in a funk ever since. Grief hit me extremely hard.

I was going to use the words "what I've learned" at the top of this article, and in fact I just did. But given I bark out around 3,000 questions per series, and that I cannot in good conscience claim to have known all the answers before I read them out, I've learned so much that those words seem insufficient. So let's just call these salutary lessons from my first series hosting Britain's longest-running TV quiz, University Challenge.
