The idea that gender is a performance, originally articulated by the theorist Judith Butler in 1990, has grown far beyond the original reaches of Butler’s writings. Butler did not mean that gender was a purposeful performance but rather an unconscious, socially prescribed one. However, that idea has evolved and been pushed forward by those who find resonance in the desire to literally perform gender, or to actively reject any gender performance at all.

The coastal town is often depicted as a patriotic Victorian throwback – a dream of a place that perhaps never even existed. Wind breakers, Britannia and cockles. Arcadia for the cash strapped.

Soft Structures is not so much a group show as an assemblage of commissions that interweave underrepresented cultural histories from the region around Teesside. Fiona Larkin and Ian Giles have created two distinct bodies of work that respond to the Middlesbrough Collection held at MIMA, shown alongside a selection of ceramics and a bench designed by the artist Anna Barham. On entering the large space on level two you step first into the world of Fiona Larkin’s Soft Power.

In 1952, American composer John Cage composed ‘4’33”’. This four-minute-thirty-three-second-long piece sees a performer come on stage, sit down at a piano, open its lid, flick through a few pages, then bow out. In 2013, the BBC broadcast an orchestra performance live at the Barbican, dividing the piece into three movements. Lawrence Foster conducts. He does not move, but you can see his chest, left hand flattened over it, quivering ever so slightly according to his breath.

It was a dark and rainy Autumn night outside Nuffield Theatre, Lancaster University, on 20 October 2023 – an ideal background for thinking about ghosts and hauntings. In association with Lancaster Arts, the production It Begins in Darkness focuses on these themes.
