PALMER — Mat-Su property owners can expect slightly higher tax bills under a proposed Matanuska-Susitna Borough budget that goes before the Borough Assembly this month. The proposal would increase the average borough property tax bill by $115 compared to last year, officials told the Assembly during a preliminary budget presentation Wednesday.

What you need to know:Limited work on the Knik River Bridge is slated to start Monday, April 7 with a full closure of the northbound span beginning April 23 and expected to last at least 30 days. All lanes of travel will be diverted onto the southbound bridge during the closure. The southbound span will close after the northbound side is complete to undergo similar upgrades. Drivers should expect significant backups and delays. Officials plan to reopen both bridge spans by mid-summer.

What you need to know:The Matsu Valley Rebuild nonprofit is seeking donations for a new tool-lending library that will allow residents to borrow equipment for home projects instead of buying it. The library will operate on an income-based membership model ranging from about $25 to $100 per year, officials said. Late returns and lost or broken tools will incur additional fees. The library will open to users once enough equipment has been collected to stock it.

PALMER — A bridge used daily by thousands of drivers headed into Mat-Su will close for repairs next month as part of a Glenn Highway project expected to trigger major traffic slowdowns and delays into the summer. The northbound span of the Knik River bridge between Mile 30 and 31 on the Glenn Highway will close for at least 30 days starting next month while crews resurface the deck and replace joints connecting the bridge to the roadway, officials said in a statement this week.
