December 2024 brought change to the Houston County Commission. Johnathan Floyd submitted his formal resignation as District 3 Commissioner after he moved out of his district, leaving a space open for an interim commissioner. Two people have submitted their names for consideration: Mike Self and Cary Rye. Although both men currently serve on other boards, dual service is not considered a violation as long as it is interim service only.

The American Legion Honor Guard presented Billy Ellingson with a plaque revering his 20 years of service to the Honor Guard. They were sneaky about it, too, keeping it a surprise.

CORK Education and Training Board’s Youthreach students were celebrated at an event recently to mark their completion of Level 3 and 4 Quality & Qualifications Ireland (QQI) awards. One of the students at the annual graduation ceremony was Hafiz Ullah, who left Afghanistan at 15 years of age in 2020 and undertook a perilous journey across Iraq and into Europe through Turkey, Greece, and Macedonia before arriving in Cork city.
